Duncan of Jordanstone is one of the few art and design institutions in the UK that is part of a world class University, renowned for its pioneering research and creative practice. This commitment to excellence infuses all that we do.
The College believes that teaching and learning is led by research, which explains why it employs so many practitioners in art and design who are engaged in world class research. New knowledge, ideas and innovation in media and techniques flows from this research into the teaching environment.
We are an advanced art school reaching out from our traditional strengths and commitment to studio based teaching, to connect ourselves with the challenges and opportunities of our fast changing world. In doing this we are radically redefining the roles of the artist and designer, and highlighting a new relevance for the visual disciplines.
Duncan of Jordanstone is an international art and design college. We attract students worldwide, provide our undergraduates with international exchange opportunities, and our staff undertake research and exhibit their work throughout the world. But we remain proud of our history in Dundee, which provides us with a very distinctive character. We are also proud of the contribution we have made to Dundeeωs future, helping to stimulate new creative industries and cultural activities in the city. As the BBC recently reported, Dundee is one of the worldωs top smart cities.
On this website you can learn more of our College, the achievements of our students and staff, together with something of our character and the ways in which we are redefining visual disciplines and visual education. Duncan of Jordanstone is different - and it makes a difference.
Professor Georgina Follett O.B.E. Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Deputy Principal of University of Dundee.

Co-convened by the Victoria and Albert Museum and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, the symposium “Prototype - craft in the future tense”, is being held at the University of Dundee and Dundee Contemporary Arts on June 10th-11th 2010. An amazing line-up of internationally renowned guest speakers will present a diverse range of perspectives concerned with innovation and ingenuity through prototyping. Their talks will stimulate unusual conversations and debate to fully explore the radical and multiple ways that people from across disciplines are experimenting with and sharing ideas.
Speakers include: Michael Schrage, Business Innovator at MIT; Stuart Brown, Biomedical Engineer at the University of Dundee; Simon Starling, Turner Prize winning Conceptual Artist; Constance Adams, Space Architect, Houston; and Chicks on Speed, Musicians, Artists, and Innovators, Berlin.
“Prototype” is the University of Dundee’s major contribution to Crafts Festival Scotland, a nationwide series of events over the summer of 2010 that aim to portray the range of skills and ideas inherent within craft and craftspeople in a new light.
