Duncan of Jordanstone is one of the few art and design institutions in the UK that is part of a world class University, renowned for its pioneering research and creative practice. This commitment to excellence infuses all that we do.
The College believes that teaching and learning is led by research, which explains why it employs so many practitioners in art and design who are engaged in world class research. New knowledge, ideas and innovation in media and techniques flows from this research into the teaching environment.
We are an advanced art school reaching out from our traditional strengths and commitment to studio based teaching, to connect ourselves with the challenges and opportunities of our fast changing world. In doing this we are radically redefining the roles of the artist and designer, and highlighting a new relevance for the visual disciplines.
Duncan of Jordanstone is an international art and design college. We attract students worldwide, provide our undergraduates with international exchange opportunities, and our staff undertake research and exhibit their work throughout the world. But we remain proud of our history in Dundee, which provides us with a very distinctive character. We are also proud of the contribution we have made to Dundeeωs future, helping to stimulate new creative industries and cultural activities in the city. As the BBC recently reported, Dundee is one of the worldωs top smart cities.
On this website you can learn more of our College, the achievements of our students and staff, together with something of our character and the ways in which we are redefining visual disciplines and visual education. Duncan of Jordanstone is different - and it makes a difference.

Research Assessment Success
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design has been rated as the top art and design institution in Scotland and amongst the highest in the UK for the world-class quality and excellence of its research. Over 240 research outputs from 64 researchers (ninety percent of eligible staff) were submitted to the 2008 RAE. The research covered a very wide range of projects, disciplines and geographical areas, with projects from the NW Territories of Canada to the Antarctic convergence of South Georgia. Since 2001 interdisciplinary research has become a key strength, with funded projects in visualisation for bi-science, medicine, nursing and midwifery, accountancy, computing, dance, environmental protection and management, archiving and conservation, design to counter crime and terrorism. Around £3.4 million was secured from research councils, government agencies or industry with a further £2 million awarded in commissions and prizes.
35% of our research outputs were rated at 4* - world class research, against a UK average of 17%. Overall 80% of our outputs were rated as international or better.
